How to Avoid Temper Tantrums in Toddlers

Tantrums are a normal part of child development. This is their way of expressing their hunger, tiredness, pain, irritation, and frustration when they are not able to express themselves effectively through words yet.

Being a daycare in Detroit, Michigan, we know that tantrums can be frustrating to parents, too, especially when you are in public. So, here are some of our expert strategies for reducing the occurrences of tantrums in children:

  • If you have things at home that you don’t want them to play with, make sure they can’t see or reach them as much as possible. This is to avoid any fuss.
  • If your child is already frustrated, try to distract him/her with a different activity. Take them in a different environment, or offer a small treat.
  • Practice doing everything at the same time every day. In other words, create a routine. Once they get the hang of what time they need to sleep, what time is playtime over, and other activities, it will be less likely that they’ll cry over wanting to play more or to stay awake.
  • If you need to run an errand and deviate from the routine, make sure to plan the day ahead. Try to avoid running your errand when they are tired, hungry, or have not yet taken their nap.
